Historic garden structures
A culturally important public garden regains former glory.

Client Need:
The garden of the Higgins House at Worcester Polytecnic Institute was hit by a micro-burst. The mansion, located on the campus, is an irreplaceable example of workmanship that is inextricably linked with the institution's history. The formal garden has been the site of many weddings over the years.
Several structures were damaged, including a long wooden arbor, supported by a double row of ornamental columns. The entire structure, including the brick foundation, columns and wooden arbor, had to be reconstructed as close to the original as possible.
What We Did:
The columns offered the greatest challenge, but we were able to locate a firm that could reproduce them from a casting of one of the originals. We sub-contracted the brick-work to an excellent mason, and cut the pieces for the new wooden arbour and the pergola in our timber frame shop. Now garden strollers are enjoying the grounds of the Higgins estate once again. (Do we hear wedding bells?)
